The films in the National Feature Film Competition of the 29th International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival, which will be held on 12-18 September 2022.

The films in the competition are first or second films of the directors and the gender equality (5 women directors) once again drew attention to the innovation and rejuvenation potential of Turkish cinema.

The 29th International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival Feature Film Competition is chaired by director and screenwriter Özcan Alper,[1] former director of Odessa International Film Festival, Palic International Film Festival programmer Julia Sinkevych[2], cinematographer Gökhan Atilmış[3], actress Nazan Kesal[4], actor Levent Özdilek[5], musician Fahir Atakoğlu[6]and writer / academician Prof. Dr. Umut Tumay Arslan[7].

The awards will be announced on the evening of 17 September, 2022

“Bana Karanlığını Anlat | Tell Me About Your Darkness” Director: Gizem Kızıl



Veli Tanyeli dies after a heart attack. As the funeral process begins and Tanyeli is brought to the gas station before her burial, all the conflicts that remained hidden between the family come to light. Nermin begins to settle accounts of his unhappy marriage and the past years, in which he is trapped, in the gas station after the death of his wife. The painful woman's confrontation with her husband is actually a confrontation with herself, from which she has been running for years.

“Bir Zamanlar Gelecek: 2121 | Once Upon a Time: 2121”  Director: Serpil Altın (World Premiere)

Due to the climate crisis and famine, the world becomes uninhabitable by the end of the 21st century. A group of people who managed to survive on the earth, where most people died, set up blocks underground and began to live there. According to the "Laws of Famine" taken by the Young Government that controlled the colonial system in 2121, the life of an old man must be terminated in exchange for the young life to be born.




“Çilingir Sofrası | The Locksmith Table”  Director: Ali Kemal Güven

Two former high school buddies meet on a raki night in Beyoglu after 17 years. As they drink and talk they realize another life is possible on a land where toxic masculinity does not exist.

 




 “Ela ile Hilmi ve Ali | Ela with Hilmi and Ali” Director: Ziya Demirel

Veteran math teacher Hilmi is preparing the earthquake survivor Ela for her college applications and is mentoring Ali, the doorman's son, who flunked for the second time at school. As they seek refuge from loneliness in each other, they slowly find themselves in an uncanny triangle, where all boundaries dissolve.

Reyhan, ergenliğe yeni adım atan genç bir kızdır. Yaz tatilini babaannesinin yanında geçirecek olan Reyhan, bu yaz diğerlerine göre bambaşka bir yaz geçirecektir. Çünkü bu yaz Reyhan, arkadaşı Şükran ile birlikte hayata dair yeni şeyler keşfedecek, dostluğun ne demek olduğunu öğrenecek ve korkularıyla yüzleşecektir.

“Mendirek | Breakthrough” Director: Cem Demirer (Turkish Premiere )

Yilmaz and Aslan are two fisherman cousins who live on an island called Bozcaada, an island located on the west coast of Turkey. Cousins work on the same ship. Towards the end of the fishing season, Aslan discovers a lobster cave.

“Suna” Director: Çiğdem Sezgin (World Premiere)

Suna, is fifty year old woman with little income earned as a nurse and cleaner. She finds a solution by marrying an old  Veysel in an imam wedding to live in an old house in a deserted village. Suna hates making love to her husband. She gets depressed and starts to use alcohol secretly. 

“Yaban | Wild” Director: Tareq Daoud

Northwest Türkiye, the present day. Claire, 45 years old, is a French expat who lost custody of her 9-yearold daughter, Sabrina, to her ex-husband, a local celebrity. Refusing to accept the situation, Claire runs away with the child. She pays a smuggler to sneak herself and her daughter out of the country through the Bulgarඈan border. But when the smuggler realඈzes he can make an extra profit by returning the kid to his father, he delays the crossing of the border and brings them to a dilapidated shack in the woods. There, mother and daughter are left to fend for themselves.

[1] Özcan Alper was born in 1975 in Artvin. He studied Physics in 1992-1996 and History of Science in 1996-2003 at Istanbul University. He attended various cinema workshops and worked as an assistant for various Turkish directors through 1996-2006. His first feature “Autumn” was shown at more than 60 international film festivals and won many awards. He was nominated for European Discovery by Europe Film Academy. His second feature film “Future Lasts Forever” had its World Premiere at 36th Toronto International Film Festival. His third feature “Memories of the Wind” received support from Cinefondation L'Atelier of Cannes Film Festival, Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam Film Festival and the Asian Film Market of Busan Film Festival. He is now working on his 4th feature film, Black Night. It's in post-production stage. His films were shown at over 100 festivals and received over 50 awards internationally

[3] Gökhan Atılmış, studied faculty of medicine four years at Dokuz Eylül university. After graduating from film and tv department of Dokuz Eylül university, İzmir,Turkey. He worked feature films, documentry and commercials as a focus puller, camera operator between 1992 and 1998. Since 1998, he has been working as a cinematographer.

[4] Nazan Kesal was born on March 28, 1969 in Manisa, Turkey. She is an actress and director, known for Climates (2006), Hair (2010) and Daire (2013). She has been married to Ercan Kesal since 2005.

[5] Levent Özdilek was born in Adana in 1955. From the age of 7-8 he was on all the film sets that Yılmaz Güney shot in Adana. In 1967, he stepped into cinema by taking on the role of Yılmaz Güney's son in the film “Benim Adım Kerim” directed by Yılmaz Güney. After secondary school, in 1971, Yılmaz Güney said to him, 'My life has been difficult and tricky, you are talented, you should be an actor, but improve yourself academically, then we'll walk together' and sent Levent Özdilek to two veteran folk actors Tuncel Kurtiz and Tuncer Necmioğlu for the conservatory exams. Levent Özdilek who passed the conservatory exam, graduated from Ankara State Conservatory in 1976 and joined the staff of Ankara State Theater. In 1979-1980, he left the State Theater and joined the AST actors. After completing his military service he returned to Ankara State Theater in 1982. In 2013, he retired from the State Theater to start his own theater, BO Sahne. After his first film, he took a break from TV and Cinema due to his academic life and then he was back in 1983 with the film “Açık Denizlere Aganta” directed by Ziya Öztan. Levent Özdilek continues his professional career as a theater, cinema, TV series actor, dubbing and theater director. He also has a book called “Hayatım Adana Benim”, published in 2019.

[6] Fahir Atakoğlu is a Turkish American[1] pianist and composer who has worked with a wide range of artists across many genres of music, ranging in style from symphonic scoring to advertising jingles. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey. From 1987 to present, Atakoğlu has created music for commercials, news segments, and documentaries via advertising agencies including Lintas, McCann Erickson, CDP Europe, Young & Rubicam, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Ogilvy & Mather. Atakoğlu acknowledges that his training in ad jingles honed his skill as a composer to create immediate context within his music.

[7] Professor Umut Tümay Arslan is a faculty member at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Sociology. She completed her doctoral studies at Ankara University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Radio, Television and Cinema and her undergraduate studies at the METU, Dept. of Environmental Engineering. She has publications published in various media that combine social theory with film studies. In “Bu Kabuslar Neden Cemil?: Yeşilçam'da Erkeklik ve Mazlumluk“ she examines the links between the search for a father figure and authority and the representations of oppression in Yeşilçam, and the connection between Yeşilçam's power of imagination with all that it has denied, repressed and invented and Turkishness in “Mazi Kabrinin Hortlakları: Türklük Melankoli ve Sinema”, and in her latest book “Kat, Sinema ve Etik” she explores the possibilities of cinema creating an ethical encounter and the ethical-political power of cinematic witnessing. She is one of the authors of “Çok Tuhaf Çok Tanıdık: Vesikalı Yarim”. She has also compiled “Bir Kapıdan Gireceksin : Türkiye Sineması Üzerine Denemeler”, which consists of essays on recent Turkish cinema by writers from various disciplines and fields. Finally, she was a part of publishing two volumes of books gifted to Nilgün Abisel “Hayatın Taklidi Dünyanın Derdi: Film Araştırmaları Kritik Yaklaşımlar” ve “Başka Bir Dünyadan Şarkılar: Sinema ve Türkiye Sosyolojisi”.
