ACTIVITIES REGARDING TO ESTABLISH AN AUTONOMOUS STATE IN
WESTERN ANATOLIA IN 1922 ACCORDING TO GREEK RESOURCES
Abstract
The Helen Anatolia Defense Organization [Mikrasiatiki Amina], which was
established afterthe Battle of Sakarya, coordinated an important activity in orderto coordinate the resistance of Anatolian Greeks. Also, it was in dialogue with similar organizations in other regions and in other countries. Those in these activities, thought that this fight would be unsuccessful unless establishing a new state in western Anatolia.
We saw that the idea to establish a new state in Western Anatolia primarily belongs to Anatolian Defence Organisation. At the begining the Greek government hesitated against to calls from Anatolian Greeks, later at July 1922 entrusted Commissar Steryadis to declare the autonomy of Western Anatolia. The Greeks never been in clarity regarding the formation
which called “Anatolian State”, “Ionian State “ or “Aegean State” at sources. To establish a new state within the boundaries of Sevres, can be evaluated as the last chance of the Helens.
Moreover some Greek newspapers also opposed to the idea of an autonomous state and mentioned about “local government” in western Anatolia.
The purpose of this article is to uncover some developments occured at Anatolia in 1922 which constitutes a turning point in Turkish history, For that purpose we implemented documents from Venizelos archive and patched up articles from newspapers Embros, Makedonia, Skrip and Rizospastis. Makedonia is a newspaper from Thessaloniki and published from Venizelist side as like as the newspaper Embros from Athens. Owner of Makedonia is Vellidis and owner of Embros is Kalpothakis. Skrip and Rizospastis are from Athens. Rizospastis is official publish organ of Greek Socialist (Communist) Workers
Party and General Union of Greek Workers. Owner of Skrip is Evstratiadis and Skrip is at Antivenizelist line in other words at Royalist line.
