Hafiz Post (1630-1694)
Hafiz Post whose birth date is not ascertained was born in Üsküdar, Istanbul. His original name is Mehmet, pseudonym is Hafiz and nick name is Post. His name however may be traced as Tanburi Mehmet or Mehmet Çelebi in the Turkish music Reference books. His father was a man of religion.
Although not much known how he was educated, he utters that his teacher was Kasimpasali Osman Efendi. Various reference books indicate that Hafiz Post has gone to pilgrimage, was a Quran reciter, was also a master in manuscript music and poetry. He has written poem in the Div am and Folk Poetry Styles.
Hafiz Post who played tanbur, has joined musical and literary gatherings in the Palace and in the one which belonged to Gazi Girayhan.
Having no official duties assumed in his youth, he was made a Divan Poetry Teacher and later, director of a central public administration. He died in 1694 and was buried in Karacaahmet cemetery, Istanbul.
He took over the Turkish music from a place where it was left by Maragali Abdülkadir and successfully, handed it over to Itri. He served a lot in the formation of composing techniques of the Turkish music.
Post who was also a very good singer himself, has composed pearly one thous and songs but only ten of them are available to day.
He also published "Hafiz Post Periodical" which is known as Song texts. In this periodical are 1062 song texts composed in 30 modal systems.
