President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party will apply for a full recount of all votes in Istanbul, a senior official said on Sunday as the opposition challenger pleaded with his rivals to admit defeat. Ali Ihsan Yavuz, a deputy chairman of Turkey’s governing Justice and Development party, or AKP, claimed that “organised irregularities” had taken place during last Sunday’s vote that saw Ekrem Imamoglu, an opposition unity candidate, emerge as the surprise winner according to initial results. Mr Yavuz said the party had already applied to the country’s high election board, or YSK, for a recount in one of Istanbul’s 39 districts. “Today, we will also apply for a full recount in all the remaining 38 districts to the YSK,” he said.
