ONE OF THE SYMBOLS OF THE U.S, THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT HAS AN EPIGRAPH, A GIFT FROM SULTAN ABDÜLMECID HAN.

On the Washington Monument, visited by millions every year and located between the Congress and the White House, there’s an Ottoman gift. This monument is the highest obelisk in the world with a height of 169 meters. During the construction process, America Foreign Ministry notified the foreign country representatives in the U.S that this monument would be a symbol of all countries in the world; and announced that the memories they sent were going to be placed there if they wished so. Sultan Abdülmecid Han sent an epigraph as a symbol of friendship of the U.S and the Ottoman Empire, which was placed on the monument.

Sent in 1854, the epigraph means the following in modern Turkish: "The pure name of Abdülmecid Han was written on this high stone erected in Washington in order to show the continuation of friendship."
