Early Cinema | Dimitri Meravidis

 Osmanlı’nın ilk sinemacısı Fenerli Dimitri Meravidis, 1900’lerin başında Paris’e gidiyor. Lumiére Kardeşler’den hem fotoğrafı, hem de sinemayı öğreniyor. 1903’te İstanbul’a, yanında bir sinema makinesiyle dönüyor. 1927’ye kadar İstanbul’un günlük yaşamını ve önemli olaylarını görüntülüyor. 1927’de Meravidis’in Galata’daki atölyesi yanıyor, çektiği tüm filmler yok oluyor. O da Yunanistan’a gidip, orada sanat yönetmenliği yapmaya başlıyor. Lumiére’ler ve Pathé’yle yakın bir ilişkide olduğu için, Paris’e burada çektiği bütün filmlerin kopyalarını yolluyor. Yani, İstanbul’un o dönemleri Pathé’nin arşivlerinde var. Geçen yıl Atina’da, İzmir Rumları hakkında I. Dünya Savaşı’ndan Mübadele’ye kadar olan dönemi kapsayan, çok iyi bir belgesel izlemiştim.

A silent Greek film starring Kimon Spathopoulos, who plays the role of Charlot (The Tramp) in its Greek version, and Apollon Marsyas, well-known from the first film by Orestis Laskos, Daphnis and Chloe.

One day, on the island of Lesbos, a shepherd by the name of Lamonas finds an abandoned little boy sucking milk from the teats of a goat. The shepherd calls the boy Dafnis and takes him as his own child. It just so happens that at about the same time, Dryantas, another shepherd, comes across an abandoned little girl that he calls Chloe and likewise takes her home with him. Dafnis and Chloe grow up together and reach puberty, when they awaken to feelings of love for each other. They are deeply puzzled by these new emotions, until one day a beautiful woman, who is sexually attracted to Dafnis, initiates him into the mysteries of love, and then Dafnis, in turn, initiates Chloe. In the meantime, we are told that Dafnis is the son of Lord Dionysiophanis and Chloe the daughter of Megaklis, a dignitary from Lesbos.

The film in question is known only through testimonies, since there is no known copy currently in existence. It is an emotional story that takes place in Macedonia, with many scenes filmed in natural settings, and fueled by anti-Turkish sentiments.

A short film, with scenes of Athens and the Parthenon. This material was added to an older, American movie, and was shown as a Greek film. 

1929 Promitheas desmotis, . Directed by Dimos Vratsanos
1928-1930  A film based on of text of Angelos Sikelianos from the Delphic Festivals, inspired by the Aeschylus tragedy of the same name. It was the first feature film on Ancient Drama. The filming started in 1928 in Delphi and was completed in 1929 in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.

Prometheus, punished by Zeus, is chained to a mountain of Caucasus by god Hephaestus. There he starts to mourn for his tortures and narrate his story. Later, Io, with whom Zeus is in love, visits him, and he predicts the birth of a hero who will dethrone the king of the gods.
