Une Victoire pour Platini

"It was not an easy situation for me – I am French, my name is Italian and I have many friends in Turkey. It was the same for Senes Erzik, the [Turkish] first vice-president of UEFA." Michel Platini, UEFA president.

"We also understand the frustration of Italy and Turkey – particularly Turkey, who lost by a single vote after bidding for a third time."Jean-Pierre Escalettes, president of the French Football Federation

When President Nicolas Sarkozy praised vanquished rivals like a conquering hero, offering Europe a financial guarantee for its 2016 football championship, it seemed France would have just enough support to beat Italy and Turkey for the right to host the Euro 2016.

And the suspicion was strengthened when Sarkozy retook his seat beside Michel Platini, accepting a hearty handshake from the president of European football's governing body UEFA, and spoke into the ear of his fellow Frenchman like an old confidante. An hour later, France's win was confirmed by a slim 7-6 vote over Turkey.

It will the third time France has hosted the championship, having previously staged the competition in 1960, winning the tournament captained by Platini in 1984 , and 2000.
