Snowy day. Listened to one of my favorite arias. O mio babbino caro, from "Gianni Schicchi". Maria Callas was full of deep feeling. Kiri Te Kanawa was pure. I got teary eyed listening to lyrics about fathers who are cruel to their daughters. Than remembered my mother singing "Karadır Kaşların Ferman Yazdırır" a Zonguldak Eregli song. Tried a few versions from YouTube. Found one performer Emel Taşcıoğlu that sounded like her. Belive me, she sang this as a lullaby. My mom sang joyful songs too and my Armenian nanny Surpuhi objected" Ka bu cocuk boyle uyur. Kalkar da sikidim deyi oynar/Hey this kid is not going to sleep like this. He will jump up and dance". So, to honor their memories I gave a translation attempt to it's lyrics. All shortcomings are totally mine.

Black thy eyebrows who writes the law
Your love takes me from land to land
If famed Lokman comes my wound festers
Only you yourself can come to dress it
karadır kaşların ferman yazdırır,
aşkın beni diyar diyar gezdirir.
lokman hekim gelse yaram azdırır,
yaramı sarmaya yar kendi gelsin.
repeated stanza
Down by the forest around I wonder
Lost my love in tears I wonder
The din of the forest hurts my head
Image of spoilt lover stands ahead
ormanlardan aşağı aşar gezerim,
nazlı yari kaybettim ağlar gezerim.
ormanların gümbürtüsü başıma vurur,
nazlı yarin hayali karşımda durur.
repeated stanza
Down by the....
Black thy eyebrows looks like coal
Being apart from lover maims life
Even if my arms were in iron shackles
I break the irons and run to you
karadır kaşların benzer kömüre,
yardan ayrı düşmek (ayrilmasi) zarar ömüre.
kollarımdan bağlasalar demire (zencire),
kırarım demiri (zenciri) kaçarım yare.
repeated stanza
Down by the....
Went faraway with hopes of return
Loaded my gun with intention to use
Yet death never crossed my mind
Give me death oh God not this parting
uzaklara gittim gelirim diye,
tabancamı doldurdum vururum diye.
hiç aklıma gelmez ölürüm diye,
ölüm ver allah’ım ayrılık verme.
repeated stanza
Down by the....
