Two leading politicians of Turkish origin, meanwhile, were not elected. Lale Akgün of the SDP, who ran for a seat in the federal parliament for the third time, and Cem Özdemir, the co-leader of the Green Party. Of the roughly 2.8 million people with Turkish roots, only about 600,000 can vote, many failing to register or acquire citizenship. Before these elections, five lawmakers out of 614 in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, were of Turkish origin.
[1] Çetin Mandacı (Greek: ΤΣΕΤΙΝ ΜΑΝΤΑΤΖΗ), born on March 7, 1970 in the Orfano village (Topeiros municipality, (Turkish) İnhanlı, Xanthi prefecture), is a politician from the West Thracian Turkish minority. He has been elected to the Greek Parliament for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement in 2007 and kept his seat in 2009 election. He studied at the Istanbul University and works as a cardiologist at the General Hospital of Xanthi. He is married to Fikret Gülsüm and has three children.
He was first elected as municipal councilman in Topeiros in 2002 and was its mayor till 2004. He was again elected at the municipal council in 2006.
[2] Ahmet Hacıosman (Greek: Αχμέτ Χατζηοσμάν), born on January 1, 1958, in Komotini (Greece), is a Greek politician from the West Thracian Turkish minority. He has been elected to the Greek Parliament for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement in 2007 and kept his seat in 2009 election. Professor and farmer, he is graduated from the Superior Institute of Theology of the Marmara University (Turkey) and is married to Fadile Alioglu. He's got a son and a daughter. From 1985 to 1990 he was chief editor of Hakka Davet. In 1986 he was elected as alderman at the Komotini municipality. From 1991 to 2001 he was the President of the School Council of the Mastanli Minority Elementary School in Komotini. In 1999 he was elected general secretary of the Association of West Thracian Minority Scientists. From 1999 to 2007 he was the president of the Party of Friendship, Equality and Peace, based in Komotini. He was elected in 2002 and 2006 at the Rhodope Prefecture, and was its vice-prefect from 2002 to 2007, when he was elected to the Hellenic Parliament
[3]Five politicians of Turkish origin have been elected to the Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, according to preliminary results, with one of them being the Free Democratic Party's (FDP) first ever Turkish deputy.
Serkan Tören of the FDP was elected to Bundestag in his first candidacy in the state of Lower Saxony in the German general elections. In addition to Tören, Memet Kılıç of the Green Party and Aydan Özoğuz of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) were elected to the Bundestag for the first time. Kılıç was elected from the state of Baden-Württemberg, while Özoğuz was elected from the city-state of Hamburg.
Ekin Deligöz of the Green Party was elected from Germany's biggest state, Bavaria, to the Bundestag for the fourth time. Deligöz has served as the vice president of the Parliamentary Commission on Family, Women and Youth since November 2005.
Sevim Dağdelen of the Left Party was elected to the Bundestag for the second time.
