At 11.22am CET, the Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave way to the thirty sailors of the first Istanbul Europa Race in front of Saint-Sophia. The crowds were huge on shore the Bosphorus to watch the six boats for the last time as they left Istanbul for good in direction of Nice via the Marmara Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean. The race will begin with the historic start signal to be given from the Topkapi Palace. The first stage will finish on September 5th in Nice, city of France. In the race village, events of "Turkey Season”, which are still being celebrated in France, will be held. Inshore race will be held on September 7th in Nice and the start signal of the second stage will be given on September 8th. The second stage of the race will run between the dates of September 8-10th, between Nice and Barcelona. "Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Fair” will be waiting for us in Barcelona. Istanbul winds will blow all around the city for four days... Following the inshore race on September 12th , the start signal will be given from Barcelona for the longest stage on September 14th. And the final stage... It will last for 9 days and finish will be on September 23rd, in Brest, north Atlantic city of France.The Istanbul Europa Race, in the prestigious IMOCA class, is the latest great sailing race in the yachting calendar. Its long course through Europe is to make it a major sporting event from its very first edition. In the great tradition of stage races, the Istanbul Europa Race will bring together a fleet comprised of some of very best sailors of our time, taking them on an ideal course and offering a genuine invitation to travel.
