Verheugen on Turkey: the question is when, not if...
In short:
Addressing a policy summit entitled "Turkey's EU end-game?" in Brussels, Commissioner Verheugen said that while Turkey's track record is impressive, the reforms should continue in a "credible and sustainable" manner.

Background:
The think-tank Friends of Europe staged a day-long policy summit in Brussels under the title "Turkey's EU end-game?" on 17 June. The event's co-organisers included Union of Turkish Chambers of Commodity Exchanges (TOBB), the Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM) and Istanbul Textile and Ready-to-Wear Clothing Exporters Union (ITKIB) in Brussels, Standard and Poor's, the Turkish Businessmen's and Industrialists' Association (TUSIAD) and EurActiv.com.

Issues:
The policy summit focussed on key aspects of Turkey's EU accession process, including the recent and ongoing reform process, the changes in European public opinion about Turkey's candidacy and the broader political and economic implications of Ankara's eventual EU membership.

Coinciding with the event, Friends of Europe published a working paper by Dr Kirsty Hughes of the London School of Economics entitled "Turkey and the European Union: Just another enlargement?" The paper explores the implications of Turkey's accession and sums up the key issues related to the accession process.
