SHORT HISTORY OF THE TURKISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

SHORT HISTORY OF THE TURKISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Founded under the patronage of Atatürk, the aim of the Turkish Historical Society is to study the history of Turkey and the Turks and to publish the results of these studies.

The Turkish Historical Society was founded in April 1930 with 16 members, and was initially a dependent body of the Turkish Hearth Central Council under the name of "Türk Ocaðý Türk Tarihi Tetkik Encümeni".

On the closure of the Türk Ocaklarý on 15 April 1931, the members applied to the Ministry of the Interior for permission to found a society under the name "Türk Tarihi Tetkik Cemiyeti" (Society for the Study of Turkish History). After the language reform in 1935, Atatürk changed the name of the Society to the "Türk Tarih Kurumu" (Turkish Historical Society).

By Cabinet decree No. 2/14556 dated 21.10.1940, the Turkish Historical Society was granted the status of a non-profit association. By Law No. 2876 dated 11.8.1983, the Turkish Historical Society was incorporated in the Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History with the legal status of a public organization.

The Turkish Historical Society organizes congresses on Turkish history which have met at regular intervals up till now. The first two congresses met in the presence of Atatürk and under his auspices. The first of these was held from 2-11 July, 1932, at the Ankara Halkevi, with the aim of explaining the new approach to history and teaching of history to teachers and the public. The second congress held from 20-25 September, 1937, at Dolmabahçe Palace attracted international scholars. The main theme of the congress was the clasification and documentation of Turkish history.
