Legitimacy of the Russian Federation's Rule of Chechnya

The legitimacy of the Russian Federation rule of Chechnya. Bearing in mind what Putin told some Turkish reporters (that Chechnya was an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation), it can be argued that there was no legitimate basis for Russian rule since the Soviet Constitution is now defunct and the new Russian Constitution has no authority over Chechnya, which had consistently rejected joining the federation. So politicians in the West making statements calling Chechnya Russia's internal affair were referring to an anachronistic arrangement of the Cold War era.
