Chanak Affair

1922 ~ Chanak Affair: Chanak was a small seaport on the Dardanelles in Turkey. The Versailles treaty kept some British soldiers on duty in Turkey. In 1922, some Turkish nationalists took over Chanak territory and endangered British troops. Britain responded and turned to the Dominions for help. Churchill, then the Colonial Secretary of Britain, appealed to the Canadians for help, yet expected them to offer first. PM Mackenzie King told Britain that he would have to consult Parliament before he could send in Canadian troops. The crisis ended before Canada could make a decision on the issue. This was the first time that Canada had refused a direct request to protect the Empire.... an important step. A war did not start up over Chanak, thus Churchill was not pushed on this one.

During the Chanak crisis in 1922, the Royal Air Force No. IV Squadron deployed to Turkey aboard HMS Ark Royal and then HMS Argus with FE2Bs.
