It was commissioned by Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippell
to commemorate Atatürk's visit to Izmir in 1926.[1] According to some sources,
it is the first Atatürk monument erected in Türkiye.[2]
It is located in the garden of the structure known as the
"Yellow Mansion" across from the Bornova Train Station. Currently
used as the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative
Sciences at Ege University, the Yellow Mansion was used as the School of
Agriculture until 1933. According to the inscription on its pedestal, the bust
in its garden was unveiled in June 1926. The inscription on the monument reads
in Ottoman Turkish: "In memory of the great genius and savior of Türkiye,
the great guide of the Turkish farmers, our President, the great Gazi Mustafa
Kemal Pasha, for his honoring the Izmir Agricultural School. June
1926."[3] On an additional marble plaque added later next to the monument,
the same inscription is written in the Turkish alphabet.
It is known that the Ziraat Mektebi was visited on October
15, 1925, during Mustafa Kemal's 1925 nationwide tour. Following this visit,
the school administration conducted a study and erected a statue of Atatürk in
the school garden in June 1926. Gazi Mustafa Kemal's next visit to Izmir was on
June 24, 1926. It is not known for certain whether he visited the school or
attended the statue's unveiling.
In October 1926, the Sarayburnu Atatürk Monument,
commissioned by the Istanbul Municipality and commissioned by Heinrich
Krippell, was unveiled. Following press reports that the Gazi statue unveiled
at Sarayburnu was the first to be erected, Abidin Bey, the Director of the
Ziraat Mektebi, sent a telegram to the local and national press informing them
that the Gazi statue had been unveiled at the Bornova Ziraat Mektebi
approximately four months earlier.[3]
The monument, including its pedestal, stands 2.45 meters tall. The marble base is 1.60 meters high, and the bust is 85 cm high. The square base, with four sections, begins at the bottom, 94x94 cm, and ends with a fourth section measuring 70x70 cm at the top. A bronze statue sits on the fourth section. Mustafa Kemal Pasha is depicted in civilian clothing, his hands clasped under his chest.
This statue, considerably smaller than the Sarayburnu
Monument, is thought to have been made by Krippel as a small test or sketch.[1]
