Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project is being undertaken with the permission and support by Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums.
Yenikapı Shipwrecks excavations are carried out under the chairmanship of the Directorate of Istanbul Arcaeological Museums since 2004.

[1] Işıl Özsait-Kocabaş graduated from Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Division of Industrial Product Design, Art Major of Interior Architecture. She completed her master thesis which is about “Restoration of Wooden Artefacts in Civil Architecture and her PhD dissertation which is about “Shipbuilding Techniques and Reconstruction of Early Medieval Shipwrecks” in the Istanbul University, Department of Conservation and Restoration of Artefacts. Yenikapı Shipwrecks Excavation was in the first place, she attended various archaeological excavations and surveys. Her research is focused on the evolution of shipbuilding technology, recording and documenting, interpreting and reconstruction of archaeological boats and ships. Full scale sailing replica of the Yenikapı 12 shipwreck, which she restitution and reconstruction project, is exhibited in the Rahmi M. Koç Museum. At present, she is associate professor in İstanbul University, Department of Conservation of Marine Archaeological Objects. And, she is doing research on shipbuilding techniques, construction process and design principles of shipwrecks within the Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project. She is also interested in restoration of wooden artefacts and wood carving. She is the Istanbul University Coordinator of the European Union Projects "LIMEN-Cultural Ports from Aegean to the Black Sea" and "YOUNG MASTERS-Traditional Touch to the Preservation of Wooden Heritage: Master Hands-Young Brains Cooperation Project".
